Why Millennials Will Continue to Take the World by Storm

Why Millennials Will Continue to Take the World by Storm 5 Flares 5 Flares Zach  Groth  is a senior at Ball State University. On the post-graduation job search himself,  Zach has job experience in corporate, government, nonprofit and student-run organizations. You can tweet him any questions, concerns or blog ideas on Twitter at  @zgroth. I am a lazy, narcissistic and entitled 22 year old.   I am incredibly self-centered.   I only do things for others when I know that I will receive something in return.   I suck.   I am, in fact, incredibly immature.   I am sorry for being all of those things.   I really am.   Being let down is something you should learn to accept from me.   Every idea of success that you have for me to adopt will be left orphaned.   I’m sorry.   According to past generations it is what I do. I’m a Millennial.   Baby Boomers and Gen Xers are great! You’re…well, I would talk about how awesome you are, but this is all about me… You should know that. I’m a Millennial. I am Zach Groth, and I’m lazy. Here are three reasons why Millennials have, are and will continue to take the world by storm, and you, Gen Xers, should hate us. Reason #1:   Social Media Our “face-spaces,” “chirpers” and “video site” give us instant access to anyone.   Back in the day, when you were a kid, you had instant access to three… maybe four friends. They were called your next door neighbors.  Today, I need 160 characters and will be at Starbucks drinking my overpriced black coffee with five friends in half an hour. I can make an argument that that’s efficiency, not laziness.   Here’s another example that’s less… narcissistic. Generations before informed us that anything is possible.   We are accomplishing “anything.”   You just do not approve.   We are using all forms of social media to form a society that is our version of “anything.” Recently, I had a conversation with an esteemed vice president of a well-known company in California’s Bay Region.   She told me that her daughter wanted a traditional Indian wedding.   The bridal party was set to meet in India for a five-day planning trip.   While they were in India they would buy, learn, observe and take picture of anything that she wanted in the wedding. Here’s the kicker; the entire trip was planned from six different locations on two American coasts and three countries… on Google Docs. No one in the party sent an email and no one certainly picked up a telephone. Ten years ago, hell, three years ago that would have been a laughable thought. In humble efforts to sum up reason hashtag one; Gen Xers are jealous.     We have the world at our fingertips â€" not our handlebars.   Again, is that efficient or lazy? Reason #2: I’m entitled. According to TIME Magazine; I am a, “lazy entitled narcissist” and part of “The Me, Me, Me Generation.” Thankfully though, generations before taught Millennials that we don’t need anyone else to make us feel special for absolutely nothing. Thank you! If you are shaking your head to that proposition please refer to the 20+ trophies that I received for simply existing on athletic teams.   Thank you for those trophies… and everything for which they stand. So now what? Here we are â€" more than two decades later, and I’m here.   I am proudly entering the worst economy since the Great Depression with more than $35,000 of student debt, as a member of the most educated generation in the history of the world.   It is a privilege. Seriously, I am eternally grateful for the education that I have received.   Though it has not been easy; courses like Geopolitics, classes titled “Research” (cause that sounds like a blast) and how can I forget… math… My education was not handed to me; I was given the resources to earn it. The same resources that you, Gen Xers, had when it cost 600 percent less to attend college back in the day. Is that entitlement?   No. That is not entitlement.   I earned that. Here’s where I am entitled: You told us that we can do anything we want when we grow up.   That we are special just how we are, and that other people’s opinion of us did not matter.   In fact, you should be happy.   We took your advice.   I am entitled to that dream because you gave it to me.   Why would I give it back?  Reason #3: We have extended the “young adult” stage of life This one is my most favorite!   It’s so simple! In 1960, 77 percent of women and 65 percent of men had finished school, got their own place to live, became fiscally independent, were married and had kids by 30 years old. #LOL #GoodJoke #Millennial4Lyfe Half of a century later, those numbers have dwindled to a mere 13 percent of women and 10 percent of men. WOAH! Why? Why are we (Millennials) so irresponsible with our lives? Why haven’t we settled down and started the American dream? My answer is simple… This is our American dream.   We are just doing what you told us. Anything. So here’s to you, Millennials.   We are creating a society that we can efficiently function in â€" it just so happens that we can function with our fingertips.   An environment that does away with cliques and is moving toward a more inclusive and tolerant society.   We have a culture that is not “play hard, work hard” but combines the two for workplaces that are statistically and consistently more productive than our parents’ companies.   We have replaced mass media with personal media.   I have become “friends” with people we haven’t met; “liked” something because the caption is witty and snapchatted our YOLOs. I’m a Millennial, and I am lazy.

6 Ways Being Debt-Free Transformed My Life - Cubicle Chic

6 Ways Being Debt-Free Transformed My Life - Cubicle Chic 6 Ways Being Debt-Free Transformed My Life Debt-free Life, Development, Lifestyle June 30, 2017 7 CommentsMost of us know having a lot of debt is a bad thing and being debt-free is a good thing. Yet most of America is in debt and things like student loan and mortgage are as common as having a pet. Just this week, one of my favorite podcasts Death, Sex, and Money did a two-part series on student loan how the massive amount of debt is affecting the lives of Americans. And it really got me thinking. The misconception about having debt  It’s common sense that if you borrowed money, you have to pay it back, regardless of who you borrowed it from; your parent, your friend, a shady company, or the government. But conventional wisdom also says “there is good debt and bad debt; good debt is good” or “you need to be in debt in order to build credit”. How do we reconcile these two things, especially in the face of daily advertisement and promotions that bombard us on Facebook, email inbox, even freeway billboards? Going into de bt feels so natural, so easy, and normal because “everyone has it.” Not to mention the elusive concept of being debt-free… just how does that even feel? It’s like a weight-loss programMuch like trying to lose weight, if you don’t know why you want to be in shape or what the benefits of being in shape are, you’re not going to have much progress toward the  goal. Yes, we all know being in shape means you’re healthier and your clothes might fit better. But how does being fit change your daily decisions? How does being fit change the way you interact with people? Would it change your self-image? How does being fit change YOU on a deeper level?Replace “fit” in the above paragraph with “debt-free”, you’ve got a series of questions you need to ask yourself, in order to truly understand why you should become debt-free.My becoming debt-freeI’ve mentioned a few times (here, and here) about the fact that my husband and I have become debt-free. It was one of our biggest goal in 2016 before we were to get  married. We reached our  goal at the end of 2016. We kept that debt-free lifestyle for about 6 months until May this year, when we have purchased and moved into a first house together. Yes, this officially put us back in debt with our mortgage. Even still, it’s our plan to have the mortgage fully paid off within the next 5-7 years. Those 6 months of being truly, completely, and utterly debt free gave me one of the most transforming experiences I’ve ever had. In today’s post, I’d like to share with you how becoming debt-free has changed me, my mentality, my habits, and my outlook on life.1. It made it possible for me to walk away from a job that was draining me and detrimental to my well-being.It was a dream company to work at. Getting the job in and of itself was such a milestone for my career. But as fate would have it, this position became one of the worse professional experiences I’ve had. I needed to walk away from it, and I did. I w as only able to do that because financially we were able to do that as a household. We had no more bills to pay other than our monthly expenses for the basic essentials2. It made me NEVER want to go back in debt again. This was a  very  subtle change in my attitude. So subtle that it took me a while to notice. When you are $2000 in debt, adding $20 on that credit card bill feels like nothing. It’s like finishing up a big shopping trip and adding in another  impulse-buy thingy at the check-out counter. That’s how they get you. Once I was CLEAN from any debt whatsoever, putting $5 on my credit card made me re-think my decision. So then I’d decide to put it on my debit card instead, which made it even harder because now I was spending cash. Did you know that research shows spending cash feels more painful in our head than credit card transactions? All things point toward a credit card-less world for us and that’s how we do it today. Debit card and cash. The only exception is mortgage I guess. In California it’s nearly impossible to save up the kind of cash you need to purchase a decent home.3. It makes me more vigilant when I spend money.Along the same lines as the above sentiment, being debt-free makes me re-consider all of my purchases. I talked about how I am so much more vigilant about how I spend money related to the up-keep of my blog.   But even in my life outside of the blog I’m finding myself paying attention to coupons (I was never a coupon clipper), second guessing my urge to purchase something, or abandoning a full shopping cart (online). (Do you guys do that??) Take our new house, for example. I could’ve gone to Home Goods plenty of times and just go crazy on home decor stuff. Which trust me, I totally wanted to. And the backyard… don’t get me started on the backyard. I SO wanted to buy all these patio furniture!! But no. It’s not in our budget right now, not to mention we still have boxes of stuff to unpack. So we wait, maybe n ext month or the month after we will slowly get to the bits and pieces of new purchase we will need. But waiting is the new virtue I have gained now.4. It made giving being generous easier. My husband and I are both the type to like entertaining friends and family, such as hosting dinner parties or pick up the tab for a gathering. When we were in debt, there was something uncomfortable when we did it and also when we didn’t do it. It felt irresponsible picking up the tab when we knew we still had other debts to pay down. But if we didn’t, something irked at us. Same thing for when I see an ASPCA ad (do they get you guys too?? I am such a wimp. I cry when I see those ads and take my wallet out…). You want to help, and you know you make good enough money. But you can’t. Because you have debt.Once we were debt-free, it all changed. Because we have a written budget, we put down a certain amount of how much we want to spend on treating our loved ones. Because we have no more car loan or credit card bills to pay, it feels like we have extra money to dedicate to treating family and friends.5. It changed our relationship by changing our relationship with money. This is probably the number 1 game changer when it came to how being debt-free changed my relationship with my husband. Finance used to be such a taboo subject, because every time we talked about it we wound up having some sort of fight. He was always the responsible one, and I was the free-spirit. I used my decent income as an excuse, and spent, spent, and spent. When we moved in together and our finances started to merge, there was a really uncomfortable period of time we went through. My husband is has gentle spirit so he never wanted to hut my feelings. But issues inevitably would bubble up and it would force us to have the conversation. I sometimes ended up tearing like a child that realized she did something wrong, or stormed out the door because I felt embarrassed and humiliated. The solution, came in the form of a financial guru by the name of Dave Ramsey.  In short, Dave Ramsey teaches people how to get out of debt and how to live a debt-free life, and does so with black and white principles that are very easy to follow. He’s funny, sarcastic, very harsh but rightly so. Personal finance is such an important aspect of our daily living but if you think about it, there’s no instituted learning in our education that teaches you anything. What we know we learned from our parents, social media, and our friends. It’s no wonder most of up end up messing up at some point in their life on personal finance.Since completing Financial Peace University led by Dave, my husband and I are in-sync, speak the same language, have the same expectation, and can talk about any money issues openly and calmly. We have Dave Ramsey to thank.  Check out his program… it changed our lives. I hope it changes yours too!6. It gave us complete financial peace. This is an intangible and very subtle c hange in our mentality. It’s very hard to describe, but it’s this general feeling that…you’re okay. There is no fear or anxiety when we look to our future together. We know for a fact as long as we stick to the basics â€"  a good budget, no-debt, always talk to each other â€" we will be okay. They say the number 1 reason for divorce in America is finances. We have complete confidence that we won’t have this issue. This kind of peace won’t come from large incomes (trust me, when we had the most fight was when we made the most money as a couple). It won’t come from you guys being math geniuses. It won’t come from some kind of financial windfall like an inheritance or winning the lottery. Because if you don’t have a plan, you won’t be able to build wealth or keep wealth.Get on a plan today. Get out of debt. If you find what I talked about here foreign… you will have that ah-ha moment when you finally get rid of your last dime of debt. Trust me.P.S. This is NOT a sponsored post. Victor and I have completed Financial Peace University in March, the same month we got married. It was one of the best experiences ever. 7 Things to Ask Yourself When Making a Decision at Work

7 Things to Ask Yourself When Making a Decision at Work The workplace is full of tough decisions. You might make a few every year. Or even some each week. Hell, your day-to-day might be filled with hard choices. Before you make your next decision, consider asking yourself a few of the following questions1.What is my goal? Oftentimes, when were doing frequent decision making, it can be easy to get caught-up in knowing the answers, and knowing them quickly. Next time you have a few options in front of you, think all the way back to the beginning. What was the original goal? How will this decision impact that goal? A continual practice of remembering your goals can help to side-step decisions that are caught up in minutiae, dont serve the organizations mission, or are wildly off-track.2.Is this issue important or annoying? Some decisions need to be made because an issue has suddenly appeared. Perhaps its a problem with a coworker, a volunteer, an employee, or a business partner. But whe n it comes to making choices about what to say or do and how to do it, consider that the behavior at hand might be annoyingbut not important. Even when something irritates us mightily, we dont necessarily need to address it. Are we irritated by someones behavior or concerned for the business? This is a key question.3.How often does this typically happen? This question works wonders in all sorts of scenarios. When changing a company policy, think about how often the specific situation usually occurs. In business, check the historical probability that a certain exchange will take place. Creating an awareness around frequency can not only change the decision you make, but also inform how you deal with similar decisions in the future.4.Is this persons behavior intentional? Is it consistent? Sometimes we have to make decisions that involve other people. Similar to the question of an issue being important or annoying, it is necessary to consider whether a persons behavior is intentional a s well as consistent. Sometimes people have bad days. And many times, people have no idea how their behavior is affecting other people or making others feel. Before deciding to go into battle with a coworker or employee, do a quick checkdoes this individual know how they are making you feel, and is their bad behavior a regular occurrence? If so, yes, it might be time for a discussion.5.Do I need to put my emotion and/or ego on the backburner? Sometimes we may think that we are approaching a decision from an entirely neutral zone. But emotions and egos can be oh-so sneaky. Do a simple self-check-in before you make your next decision. You may find that your own pride, nostalgia, preferences, or other factors are getting in the way of making the best decision for you, your team, and your business.6.Have I asked the experts? This might seem like a no-brainer, but there are times when we all forget to ask for help, or at least to consult other people. Its wonderful and important to trust ourselves, but when it comes to decision-making, theres little harm that can come from inviting other voices into the conversation.7.How will I share my decision once Ive made it? This can be a surprising question to bring to the decision-making table, but one that you wont regret asking. Once youve made that hard decision, youll surely have to share the results with other people, be they board members, customers, coworkers, supervisors, or family members. Thinking about how youll do thatand what their reactions might becould drastically change the decision you ultimately make.--Kaitlyn Duling is an author, freelance writer, and poet who ispassionateabout supporting and uplifting other women.
